Blog Post #1

1. In the article "Destroyed" by Peter F Martin  he emphasizes that not only is the use of steroids cheating, but the abuse is detrimental to the athletes health as well. Performance enhancers have a huge negative impact on sports, the competition is meant to be played fairly and naturally. Many sports fan complain of the cheating damaging the game, but the underlying issue is the players. Athletes who use performance enhancers are victims of steroid abuse. They will live with the consequences of their actions for the rest of their life, (which may not be too long after retirement). The writer urges sports fans to look at the bigger picture and consider the athletes are just as human as anyone else.

2. Not only are steroids and performance enhancers a danger to the sports, they also have a negative effects on the players health as well. Sports fans and commentators complain that the games they love are being damaged by steroid abuse. When in reality the health and well being of the players should be the major concern.

3. In the last paragraph of the article "Destroyed" Peter F Martin says, "Athletes are as free as other people to make mistakes and suffer the consequences; in short, they are humans like the rest of us." To me, this quote is saying even  professional athletes, who are in the spotlight often, are allowed to make mistakes and pay the consequences just like the rest of us. The only difference is our mistakes are not blasted all over the media.

  1. Ashley,

I agree with you 100% on the last paragraph. A lot of people don't realize what these drugs are doing to the athletes. We only focus on the negative impact due to all the social media and the consequences. The world doesn't take the time to think about the treatment that these professionals need in order to get them to stop using these dangerous drugs. If only a little bit of time was spent educating the athletes the danger of using these drugs a lot more of them may stay away from using the steroids. We just need to look at the bigger picture and figure out why they choose to use the drugs and what help we can give them. Great article

  2. Ashley, nice post! A few things I would recommend is to be sure to include in-text citations even when we paraphrase something, as it comes from an outside source and still needs credit. The other part is with the last paragraph, you should also include the citation, which would be the author's last name a page number like (Martin 580). Keep this feedback in mind as we move forward with future assignments!

  3. I feel like the last paragraph of the story can be taken multiple ways. Yes, unfortunately the mistakes of athletes and those we hold in high regard are often blown out of proportion, but I also feel like some people could feel almost betrayed by the athletes actions. We as a society raise these individuals up on so high of a pedestal that we feel like whenever an incident like this occurs, it feels like it is almost an attack on us personally. When we allow ourselves to praise and put so much faith into these people we feel like we were lied to, when in reality most of the time these athletes didn't even want to be held to a standard so high.

  4. i like the quote and your explanation in the last question. i've always been one to learn from my mistakes, so just as the sentence says, we are all free and we all have the choice (if in this situation for some reason!) use the steroids and cheat, or not and play the game fairly and the way it was intended too. Do you think you would fall into the category of enhancements if you were surrounded in a world of athletes using themselfs? its hard to say if i would or not just because i know that when its in your face and daily life, its always easier to fall into that category and be another statistic
